Shift’s Business Impact Program /
About the BIP /
A trusted forum where committed companies exchange experiences and explore new approaches as they seek to strengthen the quality and credibility of their due diligence.
We know from experience that embedding due diligence practices and addressing human rights impacts requires experimentation, learning and adaptation. For this, companies need confidential spaces to learn from emerging practice, test responses to real-world dilemmas, and understand what is working in other companies facing similar challenges.
Practitioners tell us they need moments to step back and reflect on how to position their work against broader economic, political and sustainability trends, as well as to be challenged and inspired by new thinking and ideas.
Shift’s Business Impact Program (BIP) was created to meet these needs.
Benefits of the Program /
The Business Impact Program is more than a peer network and more than an advisory service. It is a long-term partnership that helps companies strengthen their practice, build internal capability, and contribute to shaping the future of business and human rights.
Through the program, companies are able to:
- Learn from emerging, work-in-progress practice and engage in frank discussions with peers facing similar realities.
- Develop and test innovative methods, tools, and approaches alongside other companies and with guidance from Shift's experts.
- Build a long-term relationship with Shift as a trusted advisor, enabling us to understand their business deeply and provide informed, practical support as challenges arise.
- Draw on Shift to engage senior leaders and functional teams in ways that are pragmatic, constructive, and independent.
- Navigate a rapidly evolving landscape of regulation, stakeholder expectations, and global challenges with access to Shift’s balanced, expert insight on what lies ahead.
What the BIP includes /
Participants in the Business Impact Program receive access to a comprehensive package of learning, advisory support and capacity building opportunities.
Guided peer learning
BIP member companies meet regularly in Practice Groups that address shared implementation challenges, such as supply chain due diligence, impact measurement, and human rights and climate. An in-depth annual thematic workshop gives members the opportunity to explore the most pressing global developments, questions and challenges shaping their work.
Advisory support
Shift’s expertise on tap
Member companies benefit from advisory support from Shift’s expert team to help them address priority challenges and strengthen implementation within their own organization. This enables members to have Shift on retainer, with a baseline of ten days of support included in the program fee that members can add to at the same discounted day rates.
Capacity building
Building company-wide knowledge and skills
Members have open access to focused and targeted capacity building for leaders and teams across their business. This includes a Human Rights Foundations Course, a practical introduction to the UN Guiding Principles and human rights due diligence, and webinar sessions focused on emerging trends, regulatory developments, and evolving expectations relevant to human rights due diligence.
Participation criteria/
The BIP is built on trust, openness, and a shared commitment to advancing practice. Participants join not only to learn from others, but also to contribute their own experiences, challenges, and insights for the benefit of the wider group.
In joining the BIP, participants commit to:
- Engaging actively and consistently in peer learning and discussion.
- Sharing experiences, insights, and challenges in ways that help others learn.
- Contributing to a trusted environment that enables open and candid exchange.
- Exploring emerging practice with curiosity, and a willingness to challenge assumptions.
- Working collaboratively to develop and test new ideas and approaches.
To preserve the integrity and value of the program, Shift looks for evidence of:
- Commitment from senior leadership to respecting human rights.
- A genuine intention to strengthen the company's approach to human rights due diligence.
- Sufficient internal capacity and resources to participate meaningfully in the program.
- Alignment with internationally recognized human rights standards and the purpose and values of the program.
