Measurement /
Our work /
Shift is widely recognized for its leadership and expertise in defining practical and meaningful ways to measure progress and impact as part of human rights due diligence (HRDD).
We equip business leaders, reporting framework developers, investors and regulators to develop and use indicators and metrics that show whether companies are successfully implementing the practices that deliver positive impacts for people and both protect and create value for the business.
For companies, robust measurement helps assess impacts, track effectiveness, and demonstrate impact. For investors and lenders, it helps prioritize issues, target engagement, and reduce material risks. For regulators, standard setters, and civil society, it underpins transparency, accountability, and enforcement.

Innovating methods. Advancing practice. Shaping standards.
Innovating practical methods and measures
We have a strong track record of advancing practical measurement approaches and tools grounded in robust analysis and multi-stakeholder consensus-building, including through Shift’s Valuing Respect Project and Strengthening the S in ESG research. We also bring deep expertise in measuring impacts linked to economic inequality, including living wage, living income, and just transition issues across sectors.
Advising business and financial institutions
We have supported companies, investors and lenders to develop and use targets, indicators and metrics that work for their organizations. We tailor these to address the specific impacts and risks, and to ensur that measurement is credible in the eyes of external stakeholders. We run peer-to-peer sessions with companies and financial institutions to exchange and shape market practice.
